Local playwright Cody Daigle brings a fresh take on the most famous writer in English literature and his family. The play, William and Judith, premieres Sept. 17 and runs through Oct. 2.
Shakespeare's career and life is riddled with conspiracies and questions of authorship. Many books have come out proposing that the Bard did not write his own plays due to questions of education, geography and more. Daigle comically plays with this notion in imagining that Shakespeare's sister, Judith, flees to London to escape an arranged marriage and to hopefully write plays herself. Shakespeare is suffering from writer's block and knows he has three months to complete a play. Between the brother's and sister's mistakes and successes their worlds get turned upside down. Daigle was inspired to write this play about gender roles and creative identity partially because of Virginia Woolf's A Room of One's Own.
William and Judith is directed by Alicia Chaisson and stars Aren Chaisson and Sarah Gauthier as William and Judith, respectively. This is a workshop production produced by AUI/AURA, a community theater company. It will be held at the space next to Carpe Diem Gelato & Espresso Shop at 810 Jefferson St.
Performance times are 7:30 p.m. Sept. 17, 23, 24, 30 and Oct. 1 at 7:30 p.m. with 2 p.m. matinees on Sep. 18, 25 and Oc. 2.
