The fall fundraiser for Alliance Française de Lafayette will be poured Thursday at Jolie's Louisiana Bistro, 507 W. Pinhook Road. Popular local bartender Luke Tullos will offer an insightful presentation on the art of making historically accurate cocktails, some of which are indigenous to Louisiana: the Ramos Gin Fizz, the Vieux Carré and the Sazerac, New Orleans' official cocktail will be made and served. For $35, each attendee receives instruction on how to tend bar "professionally" at home and also a free cocktail. Appetizers are half the regular price for Alliance members. Have you ever wondered how William Shakespeare managed to write so many plays with so little time? So have a lot of detractors. There is a theory that Shakespeare didn't write his own plays at all, or at least had a little help, and this idea is what local playwright Cody Daigle had in mind writing William and Judith. It's a whimsical take on what would have happened if the Bard had a sister, Judith, who decided to get out of Stratford-upon-Avon and hit the road for London to forge her own career as a playwright. This is an homage to Virginia Woolf, who first imagined Judith in A Room of One's Own. (In real life, Shakespeare had a daughter named Judith.) It seems half of Acadiana hits the water on the weekends. Now on Sundays the Pastor Brothers are setting sail on the Couyon Queen for cruises along the Vermilion, and you're invited. The Sunday sallies begin at Vermilionville and toddle down the river, picking up lunch and then heading back to Vermilionville to listen to Cajun music and dance away the calories. Complimentary cocktails and water are available on the boat as the Pastor Brothers tell stories and give a little bit of history to their guests. MONDAY, SEPT. 19
El Secreto de Sus Ojos ("The Secret in Their Eyes") won the 2009 Academy Award for best foreign language film. A crime thriller made in Argentina, the film is based on a bestselling novel revolving around a retired federal agent, Benjamin Espósito, who returns to the investigation into the rape and murder of a young woman in her home. It is told in staggered flashbacks as Espósito goes back to the case, certain he knows who committed the murder by looking at a series of old photographs of the victim. A remarkable, final twist will have the audience gasping. Director Juan Jose Campanella directed several episodes of "Law & Order" and returned to South America to film this movie.
