Bayou Teche cleanup slated as precursor to second annual Tour du Teche race.
An effort three years in the making to clear the Bayou Teche of unsightly trash and debris continues Sept. 24 with another cleaning day organized by Cajuns for Bayou Teche.
The group, founded by Arnaudville resident Blake Couvillion, came together a few years ago in hopes of restoring the Bayou Teche to a healthier state, one suitable for canoeing, kayaking and other recreational activities.
From water heaters to washing machines, the group has lifted 40 tons of trash since its inception with the help of numerous volunteers and collaboration with public agencies.
A massive side show of the Bayou Teche clean up project is the second annual Tour du Teche. Dubbed on its website as the "world's longest adventure non-motorized boat race," competitors from across the globe will gather along the Bayou Teche Oct. 7-9 to paddle the 135 miles of bayou between Port Barre and Berwick.
"It is very important that we keep our momentum in this project so that we can ensure future generations get to enjoy this historic bayou in Cajun Country," says Couvillion.
Cajuns for Bayou Teche is asking for volunteers with motorized boats, canoes and kayaks to meet at 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, at the Breaux Bridge boat launch. Lunch and drinks will be provided for volunteers.
