Poet Clare L. Martin is hosting the workshop "Vision and Voice: Visual Art and Poem-Making" on Oct. 8 at the Acadiana Center for the Arts.

This workshop runs from 9 a.m. to noon and costs $20 if you are an AcA member or student and $25 if not.

Participants will be guided by Martin through the poetic technique known as ekphrastis. Meaning "speak out" in Greek, it is the idea that by observing visual art another piece of art can be created, evoking perhaps even more meaning into that original piece. This technique has been used since ancient Greece, written about by Plato and Socrates, and used throughout history. One of the most famous examples is "Ode on a Grecian Urn" by John Keats, a Romantic poet.

Martin's students will select a piece of art from "ArtAffair: A 55-Year Retrospective" being shown in AcA's Main Gallery until next week. From here their words and feelings about the selected piece will be shaped into a poem. Participants are invited to return again that evening for ArtWalk when a special reading will be held.

To register for this workshop contact the AcA at 233-7060. You can reach Clare L. Martin at [email protected] with questions or view her work here.
