The Louisiana Association of Educators' political action committee has endorsed north Louisiana special-education teacher Tara Hollis' David-v-Goliath bid for Louisiana governor. A self-described conservative Democrat, Hollis was the first person to announce her candidacy against incumbent Republican Bobby Jindal late last spring. Since then, a bevy of candidates - Democrats, a Libertarian and party-unaffiliated - have joined the field.

The LAE Fund for Children & Public Education screened the candidates and decided that Hollis' "extensive knowledge and experience as a public school educator placed her ahead during the candidate screening process."

"The future of Louisiana relies on the policies enacted by the individual who is elected to this position," says LAE-FCPE Chairwoman Joyce Hanes in a press release touting the endorsement. "We feel as though Mrs. Hollis is a true supporter of public education and is someone who will to make the children of Louisiana her first priority."

Hollis is scheduled to join eight other gubernatorial candidates at a debate Wednesday in Baton Rouge sponsored by a group of public education stakeholders comprising The American Association of University Professors, American Association of University Women, Association of Louisiana Faculty Senates, Coalition for Louisiana Public Education, Louisiana Association of Educators, Louisiana School Boards Association, Louisiana State University Faculty Senate, Louisiana Statewide Colleagues Collaborative, Southern University Faculty Senate and LSUnited. Gov. Jindal is not slated to appear at the debate.
