Louisiana may be Sportsman's Paradise, but the sportsmen don't always play by the rules. So don't let the title fool you: Louisiana Wildlife Agents In Their Own Words (LSU Press, $29.95 hardcover) is an engrossing read, rife with harrowing brushes with wild animals and, more dangerous than all, trigger-fingered poachers prowling dark woods. The book has its share of light-hearted moments, but it's the danger that will have you turning the pages. Edited by Louisiana outdoor writer Jerald Horst, Louisiana Wildlife Agents comprises short tales of adventure and heroism told by the Department of Wildlife & Fisheries agents who lived them. No doubt in the works for quite a while, the timing of the book is eerie: It comes just weeks after DWF Sgt. Paul Stuckey was found shot dead from a shotgun blast to the chest while apparently conducting an investigation into illegal nighttime hunting near St. Francisville. - Walter Pierce

This summer lawmakers in the state approved same-sex marriage, making the very state where the movement was born the largest to grant equal rights to gay and lesbian couples.
