THE WILD LIFE
Louisiana may be Sportsman's Paradise, but the sportsmen don't always play by the rules. So don't let the title fool you: Louisiana Wildlife Agents In Their Own Words (LSU Press, $29.95 hardcover) is an engrossing read, rife with harrowing brushes with wild animals and, more dangerous than all, trigger-fingered poachers prowling dark woods. The book has its share of light-hearted moments, but it's the danger that will have you turning the pages. Edited by Louisiana outdoor writer Jerald Horst, Louisiana Wildlife Agents comprises short tales of adventure and heroism told by the Department of Wildlife & Fisheries agents who lived them. No doubt in the works for quite a while, the timing of the book is eerie: It comes just weeks after DWF Sgt. Paul Stuckey was found shot dead from a shotgun blast to the chest while apparently conducting an investigation into illegal nighttime hunting near St. Francisville. - Walter Pierce

SAME SEX SCENTS
New York-based perfume house Bond No. 9 is celebrating the city's legalization of gay marriage in a sweet, aromatic way. This summer lawmakers in the state approved same-sex marriage, making the very state where the movement was born the largest to grant equal rights to gay and lesbian couples. The first three editions of the line, I Love New York for Her (pink bottle), I Love New York for Him (blue) and I Love New York for All (black), just hit the market. I Love New York for Her has notes of mandarin, nutmeg, blueberry muffin, rose, pink peony and patchouli. I Love New York for Him smells of grapefruit, juniper berries, ginger and lavender. The unisex I Love New York for All (my favorite) has top notes of bergamot, muguet and pepper with middle notes of cocoa, coffee beans and chestnut and base notes of patchouli, vanilla, leatherwood and sandalwood. Available at Kiki in River Ranch in two bottle sizes, each is priced at $105 and $175 (buy all three and save 10 percent). - Leslie Turk

ME AND YOU FOR DREW!
New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees may be on target to surpass Dan Marino's NFL record for passing yardage in a season, but he probably couldn't get any more popular in Louisiana than he already is. Famously apolitical, Brees could no doubt run for governor and win in a landslide. Parish Ink thinks so. The purveyor of clever, Louisiana-themed T-shirts has added to its stellar line of cool apparel by imagining the QB as a candidate. In bold red, white and blue on a white, cotton American Apparel T, the "Drew Brees: He's a Mighty Good Leader!" T-shirt is a winner at $22. This and other Parish Ink T-shirts can be ordered online through the company's website, ParishInk.com. But save yourself the postage and handling and drop by its new shop at 310 Jefferson St. downtown in the space formerly occupied by The Fun Shop. - WP
