The Second Saturday ArtWalk returns to Jefferson Street and environs with the usual assortment of fine art and music at galleries, restaurants and cafés downtown.
The Second Saturday ArtWalk returns to Jefferson Street and environs with the usual assortment of fine art and music at galleries, restaurants and cafés downtown. The monthly event runs from 6-9 p.m. and admission is free to the venues. Non-gallery establishments participating this month include Artmosphere, The Ballet Academie, Bizarre Ink, Frederick's Hair Studio, Recycled Cycles and Trynd. In addition, the newly opened Parish Ink T-shirt and accessories shop will celebrate its grand opening in the old Fun Shop location on the 300 block of Jefferson Street next door to Karma. And because downtown Lafayette is designated a state cultural district, original art works purchased during ArtWalk - and any time, for that matter - are exempt from state sales tax.

Prospect.2
AcA has been selected as a satellite location of Prospect.2 New Orleans, is one of the most highly anticipated contemporary arts events in the U.S. The companion exhibition, Prospect.Lafayette, opens in the Main Gallery for a complimentary viewing and runs through Jan. 21, 2012.
AcA Curator of Exhibitions Brian Guidry calls Prospect.2 "an international exhibition with world-class artists and we are honored to be able to bring this to Lafayette. Prospect.Lafayette's affiliation with a show of this magnitude is a first for our community."
Prospect.Lafayette will feature works by Icelandic artist Ragnar Kjartansson as well as Bruce Davenport Jr., Dawn Dedeaux and significant works originally shown in Prospect.1 including Willie Birch and Prospect.1.5 artist Regina Scully, Jonathan Hicks and Tameka Norris.
Curator/organizer Dan Cameron will host a gallery talk on Friday, Nov. 18, 2011 in the AcA's main gallery at 1:30 p.m. This event is free and open to the public. A Q & A will immediately follow.

Pacha Mama: earth realm series
In the Pacha Mama: earth realm series, Lynda Frese uses her own photography (digital and film-based) and other found printed material and combines these with egg tempera painting. Transparent layers of antique pigments from Northern Italy, once used to repair church frescoes, are painted over the printed collage images. The powdered pigments from the earth are mixed with egg yolks, providing an organic connection with a specific ecological community.
Pacha Mama: earth realm series imagines a set of religious iconography using ideas borrowed from the Italian Renaissance and comments upon indigenous ideas about the "end time," a prophecy shared by many cultures about the end of the natural cycle. The series draws on these sources to examine the popular meme of the apocalypse and its archetypal images of destruction and rebirth. Combining beliefs about the apocalypse of the feminine earth with equally surreal and enigmatic images of the Virgin Mother Mary, the artist rediscovers the root meaning of the word apocalypse as the "uncovering." The Saints and the Nature Spirits join forces with the South American earth goddess Pachamama. She appears as a divine entity, warming us, warning us, offering redemption, and proffering enchantment.

"Louisiana Corners" are creative contemporary landscape collages on three-dimensional wooden boxes. These mixed media collages are a combination of handmade 3D objects, found objects and torn handmade paper to create imaginative images the viewer can enjoy. Artist Mary Louise Porter's passion for intense, bold color, line and shape are shown in the collages with the theme of Louisiana and travels woven into each artwork. Porter deliberately made the pieces accessible so the viewer can move around them, turn them and look inside of them.

Honesty, ambition, passion, grace and courage are all characteristics that make a strong woman. The theme of the Arts Co-op's November exhibition of seven women's works compiles answers to the question, "What Makes a Strong Woman?" Lisa Suire and Barbara Stevens will exhibit a joint collection of jewelry. Erin Lafleur and Susannah Craig will display ceramic sculpture and practical ware. Lauren Greene Whyte, Tanya Falgout and Rena Derieg will show paintings from creatures and critters to landscapes and still lifes.
Two fund raising events will run that evening. Trees Acadiana will display and sell George Rodrique's poster of the Youngsville Heritage Oak to cover the expense to save a century-old tree from destruction due to road construction on Hwy. 89. Also, gift mugs will be available for sale benefiting Camp Bon Couer, a summer camp for children suffering from heart disease.

A native of New Iberia, Michael Van Brocklin studied art at ULL. A self-taught lino-block printer, his ideas arise from his imagination as well as nature. "I first draw the image on the linoleum, then carve the block. Once the image is ready, the block is inked with oil based black. A piece of paper is placed on the inked image and run through my press. The artwork can then be embellished with watercolors, or left as a black image." Michael will be demonstrating this process at his opening show during ArtWalk.
