Lafayette's Junior League will be helping to educate the public on child food insecurity as well as collecting non-perishable food donations Nov. 13.
Child food insecurity is a euphemism for child hunger. The worry is not simply that children are going hungry but that any food available isn't nutritious or healthful as well as how tough it is to admit their home doesn't have food.
Approximately 20 percent of Louisiana kids under 18 years old live in food insecure households.
This Sunday lists of the most needed donated items will be handed out at the Albertson's on the corner of Kaliste Saloom and Ambassador Caffery by the Junior League between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Box mixes, canned fruits, vegetables and proteins, soups, dried beans, rice and more are all necessary. With the upcoming holiday seaso, food drives are even more necessary.
Donations are welcome at any time of year at the following locations:
- any Albertson's
- Super One on Ambassador Caffery
- Super One on Evangeline
- Adrien's on Congress
- Walmart on Ambassador
The Junior League will be collecting on behalf of FoodNet, a nonprofit that distributes food to other food bank organizations in our area. Call the Junior League at 988-2739 with any questions on how you can help Acadiana's kids.
