265 employees facing layoffs at call center

by Leslie Turk

The Transcom call center in Northgate Mall is laying off 265 employees, KATC reported Wednesday.

Lafayette's Transcom call center, which originally opened as NuComm International in 2006, is laying off all of its employees and management early next year.

KATC reported that employees found out Tuesday their employment would be terminated Jan. 29:

The Lafayette office serves one client, and the client no longer needs Transcom's services, Transcom spokesperson Caroline Spiak said. She is not allowed to say the name of the company but says the call center works with clients in several industries, including the financial industry, retail businesses, and the telecommunications industry. While employees will be laid off, Transcom is not shutting its doors and is actively looking for another client.

Transcom announced in October 2009 that it was adding 700 jobs and at the time anticipated its total local employment would reach about 1,200 in 2010. Those jobs never materialized.
