Watch even Santa "jump to the left and step to the right" at Cite des Arts this weekend for a live version of Rocky Horror Picture Show.
Rocky Horror put the cult in cult favorite, the first movie to ensure a rapt and devoted following that attends performances in costume and knows the verbal script cues of when to throw rice, use a squirt gun and other such weird stuff. Rocky Horror tells the tale of Brad and Janet, a sweet couple straight off the pages of a 1950s movie script, whose car breaks en route to see a professor. The nearest home belongs to the mad Dr. Frank-N-Furter, a crossdressing monomaniacal scientist and native of Transylvania who, with the help of his even stranger household help, perform mad doctor-esque experiments. Brad and Janet knock on the door to his gothic castle and get drawn into a world not only opposite to the one they live, but one they like more.
Since the '70s live shows have been popping up all over the world and recorded in more than 30 languages. It's now famous enough that even the kids on Glee, who weren't even zygotes when the movie premiered, covered this musical. It's definitely not a show for small children, squares or people who get freaked out if performers suddenly sit in their laps.
Cite has hosted live versions of Rocky Horror before. Coming is costume is encouraged and audience interaction is key. This incarnation is directed by Blaine Peltier.
Cite des Arts is a "grassroots community arts center" located at 109 Vine St. in downtown Lafayette. It hosts plays, music, art shows and more.
