NEW ORLEANS Sophomore Darryl Surgent returned a punt 87 yards for a touchdown one minute into the second quarter, giving UL a 13-3 lead over San Diego State in the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl.

Surgent, who wears jersey #87, gathered in Brian Stahovich's punt at his own 13 and went nearly untouched on a cross-field run. Brett Baer's conversion provided the double-digit lead with 14:00 left before halftime.

It was the first punt return for a touchdown in the history of the New Orleans Bowl.Surgent averaged 9.2 yards per punt return this season but his longest was 31 yards.

The last punt return for the Cajuns for a touchdown came in 2002 when Nick Dugas returned a punt for a score against Minnesota.
