City-Parish President Joey Durel and re-elected and newly elected members of the Lafayette City-Parish Council were actually sworn in at noon on Monday of this week, but they reaffirmed their vows during a protracted ceremony Tuesday at City Hall for the television news cameras, reporters and dozens of family and friends. The 3 p.m. ceremony was followed a few hours later by the regular council meeting, which commenced with the election of new leadership. District 5 Councilman Jared Bellard and District 9's William Theriot were elected chair and vice chair, respectively, of the council, giving the panel its most conservative leadership of the Durel era. Councilmen Brandon Shelvin (District 3) and Kenneth Boudreaux (4) were elected chair and vice chair of the Lafayette Public Utilities Authority, the five-member governing board of Lafayette Utilities System.
