Gov. Bobby Jindal to Governance Commission: If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Gov. Bobby Jindal has signaled his opposition to a recommendation by the Governance Commission on Higher Education that the Taylor Opportunity Program for Students be modified to make college tuition grants a flat amount for all students regardless of tuition costs at individual schools.

The commission is recommending that TOPS awards be set at two levels: one for community colleges and the other for four-year institutions, with stipends still awarded to higher-performing students. The end game of the commission's approach is to give the state more control over the cost of TOPS. But Jindal told the Associated Press this week, in effect, it's not broke so let's not fix it.
