On Jan. 16, notable punk band The Queers is performing at Wild Salmon along with The Wild from Atlanta and two Lafayette bands, The Chatty Cathies and Mission vs. Madness.
Admittedly, punk music isn't for everybody. And punk music is not the plaintive, poppy squeals of a few '90s bands we're better off not mentioning. The Queers have a loyal and steady if small fanbase for the last 30 years. After many labels and band member changes, after several albums and touring mostly steadily through the last three decades, The Queers are still together. The band's sound is influenced by everything from the harmonious Beach Boys to musical dissidents from the East Coast's '70s punk scene.
The Queers and The Wild are both on Asian Man Records. The Wild definitely has a more complex bent than traditional punk music, using instruments like an organ for a different sound and a bit of an Irish tinge to some songs. Mission vs. Madness and Chatty Cathies have been beating Acadiana's mean music streets for a few years now and play with that particular fervor all young bands can muster.
