Agave on Bertrand opens

by Leslie Turk

The Mexican restaurant's signature bold hues and multi-colored lights have livened up Bertrand Drive.

Tuesday afternoon Agave Mexican Grill and Cantina began serving its first customers on Bertrand Drive. The bright addition to the Cajun field area - with its bold hues and multi-colored lights - is open Monday-Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Thursday-Saturday from 11 a.m. to midnight and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Hoping to take advantage of the large draw of sports fans to Cajun field, the Mexican eatery expanded into the old WOW Café and Wingery spot across from Cajun Field. WOW shut down late last year. The new Agave is larger than the original restaurant on Vermilion Street, seating about 200 versus 150. It, too, offers al fresco dining and live entertainment.

"We're gearing up for Mardi Gras," says Agave owner Nidal Balbeisi. "If you want to be here for Mardi Gras parade routes, call us right now," he says, noting that reservations for the parades are already coming in.

The restaurant blends the spices of traditional Mexican cuisine with local flavors and offers a tequila bar and lounge with more than 40 fine agave tequilas.

Balbeisi, who opened the original Agave in 2007, also owns Trynd downtown and is the restaurateur behind the successful Zeus Greek and Lebanese eateries.
