The president of Kaplan's Chic-A-La-Pie Krewe says the group plans to formalize rules about Mardi Gras float themes to ensure that floats like the one Dr. Glenn Stewart entered in Lafayette's Independent Parade Tuesday don't roll, according to a story published on VermilionToday.com, the website for the Abbeville Meridional, Gueydan Journal and Kaplan Herald newspapers.
"We have a rule that does not allow vulgarity on floats," Linda Vincent says on the site. "While that float did not have any vulgarity, it was in poor taste. Our parade is family oriented. His float is a personal attack between two people."
The float attacking Independent Co-Publisher Cherry Fisher May led to an altercation at the parade origin point near downtown Lafayette between Stewart and Erin May Fitzgerald, Fisher May's stepdaughter. Stewart is facing a felony battery charge for punching Fitzgerald after Fitzgerald attempted to pull a banner off the float - a blow that left the 41-year-old mom and schoolteacher unconscious and later hospitalized.
Vincent adds that while the krewe has no written policy regarding floats, she plans to formalize a set of rules regarding the content of floats at the krewe's next board meeting.
