Crawfish are good for lot of things, but none better than when served up as the main course for a great reason.
Such is the case for the Clause for a Cause benefit, Sunday, March 25, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Lafayette Association of Retard Citizens' Acadian Village, 200 Greenleaf Drive.
"It's pretty important," says Joey Babineaux, a director at LAV. "We're a tourist attraction, a rental venue and everything we do to raise funds here, whether it's tourists or functions, all proceeds go directly to support LARC.
"We're a non-profit," he says. "So when we make money off of Claws for a Cause, it goes directly to our clients."
Clause for a Cause is in its second year, according to Megan Morris, special events coordinator at LAV.
"We did very well. It was our first year, so we really wanted to amp it up this year, get the word out earlier," she says. "We're anticipating a good turnout."
Mark Richard will be doing the boiling onsite.
"You have to pre-purchase tickets and that determines how much he'll supply," says Morris.
Tickets are $15 for the spring fundraiser and include three pounds of crawfish and two potatoes. Tickets may be purchased online at acadianvillage.org, or at LAV's General Store.
The event is pick-up only at the campground area. Drivers may enter on Rue Debelier.
Babineaux says 70 percent of LARC's funding is from the DHH [Department of Health and Hospitals] and while DHH has had some cuts this year, LARCH dodged the blade.
"But in the past, we've had some significant cuts," says Babineaux. "When we do our Christmas program [Noel Acadien au Village] - that's our huge fundraiser for 23 nights in a row - that really helps to fill those gaps that the state's been doing when they're cutting us. So it's pretty important."
Babineaux says Acadian Village changed its name last year to LARC's Acadian Village "so that people would have an understanding that we are here to do two things: Fundraise to support LARC and also to preserve history."
Proceeds go directly to LARC.
"All of our fundraisers we've had, every dime raised goes to support the LARC clients," Morris says, which translates to more than 300 people. "It's a great organization."
