Top wedding photographer Denis Reggie in Lafayette Wednesday

by Leslie Turk

He's widely regarded as one of the top wedding photographers in the world, and on Wednesday, March 21, Denis Reggie will give a behind-the-scenes look at his illustrious career. Hosted by the Acadiana Professional Photographers' Guild, world-famous photographer Denis Reggie will give a behind-the-scenes look at his illustrious career. A sought-after lecturer, the Crowley native was hailed "the great wedding photographer of our day" by Town and Country and has been called the "best in the business" by Oprah Winfrey. He's also been featured on Entertainment Tonight and LPB's Louisiana Legends.

Reggie returns to his home state this week for four consecutive evening presentations showcasing images from his career. The discussion is part of the Explorers of Light concept, which came out of Canon USA in the mid 1990s as a broad-ranging initiative for photographic education and inspiration. Today, the group is comprised of more than 60 of the most influential photographers and cinematographers in the world.

The Explorers share their photographic passions and technical expertise with eager audiences of photo professionals, hobbyists, and enthusiasts in a variety of personal appearances, seminars, and gallery showings through the country. Read more here.

Reggie moved to Lafayette from Crowley in 1980 and began pioneering a documentary style of photography he calls "wedding photojournalism." He relocated to Atlanta in 1986, and he and his team of photographers have covered more than 1,800 weddings in this documentary style, which captures the event without posing or prompting.

Reggie is in New Orleans today and Baton Rouge tomorrow. His Wednesday Lafayette lecture will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. at Keith's Ballroom, 405 Albertson Parkway, in Broussard. On Thursday he'll be in Shreveport.

In 2007 American Photo magazine named Reggie one of the "Top 10 Wedding Photographers in the World." Reggie was actually listed first in the magazine, alongside an image he took of the Maria Shriver/Arnold Schwarzenegger wedding. (There's a family connection to the image - Reggie's sister, Victoria, was married to the late U.S. Sen. Ted Kennedy, Maria's uncle.)

The photographer, who continues to shoot weddings in his native Acadiana, has a client list that reads like a Who's Who of celebrities and public figures. Reggie, however, says high profile clients are only a small part of his portfolio.

For reservations to the Wednesday lecture, call 337-365-7500 or email Scott A. Breaux at [email protected]. The fee is $55, which includes the $25 attendance and $30 for the catered meal. Members of the Acadiana Professional Photographers' Guild pay only the $30 dinner fee.
