A dear friend of mine has long sung the praises of a misfit genre of dining he calls “food piles.”
It’s a wide, multi-lateral umbrella that includes Americanized favorites like nachos, rice bowls, burrito bowls, poutines and, arguably, salads. The commonality should be apparent here, though my unnamed friend would likely disavow the latter. You don’t win friends with salad, said the bard.
Once masticated, everything becomes a food pile in your mouth. A truly great food pile must be a pleasure to behold with bright colors and discretely identifiable parts.
As an elegant example, I submit to you the Nice Rice Bowl by the itinerant magic-makers at the Live Action Deli food truck. Theirs is an immaculate fusion of jasmine rice, Thai-larb-esque ground beef, pitch-perfect kimchi, an unidentified sweet/salty/sour/sauce for garnish and a griddle-fried egg for good measure. This is a food pile so picturesque that you will hesitate to pierce and scramble its composition into a swirl.
Hesitate not, dear readers. Stab that runny egg, smear the yellow gold and indulge this gorgeous and be-gorging mess.
PRO TIP - Bring an extra pair of pants with you on a trip to the Live Action Deli. When you try Live Action’s pork tacos, replete with crunchy slaw, you’re gonna have to sit down and chances are your only seating option is a nearby curb. You don’t want to rock gravel butt at your slate of afternoon meetings.
Live Action deli is a food truck that runs a circuit of locations around Lafayette. Follow it on its Facebook page.
