There's just something about a VW van. Make it orange and I’ll stop in my tracks every time. It’s that symbol of an open road that makes me think of vibrant easy dresses and layers of eclectic beads.
When just such a van came across my Facebook news feed one day I could see the perfect chance for a shoot that rounded out the summer months of style — a commune of style with influences ranging from bold boho geometric prints with Moroccan embellishments and that certain Native American flavor that’s timeless.
Liz Walker, the kind owner of the inspiring vehicle, was gracious enough to lend her to us for the day. (That van felt like a she to me — a strong one ready to take on those last long, hot days of summer without a care and without a map.)
We gathered models as diverse as the ensembles that are found at our local retailers — crocheted little romper, handkerchief-hemmed slip dresses, fresh linen and bold color for days. We found our laid back locale for the shoot — the serene home of photographer Robin May. And we got to work.
In a serendipitous way, the queen bee of Bayou Bohemian, JeLlyn Morvant, was available to outfit each look with pieces from her new collection. A collection so aptly named Indian Summer.
From chunky turquoise and bolo-shaped necklaces to firebirds and delicate silver, the collection from Morvant’s artistic, freespirited mind is filled with timeless pieces that work from the bold prints of now into simple sweaters come fall. (Bayou Bohemian can be found at Hemline or The Mercantile at The Beauty Shop) While the heat can be brutal this time of year there is a certain sweetness that can’t be denied. Long days and a sun that takes its time setting. These are the last weeks before a school year begins and the open road becomes a little less available for many.
It was with this carefree attitude our models rocked looks that are the definition of eclectic. Proof that great style shines no matter the temperature.
